Caboolture Student Makes History in Consumer Awards

12 November 2018

For the second year running, one of Caboolture’s best and brightest students has been awarded a prize in the Office of Fair Trading’s Buy Smart Competition.

Mckenzie Kirkham from St Paul's Lutheran Primary School received her award at a ceremony at Parliament House for researching a consumer topic and presenting it in a creative way.

State Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan said the wide array of competition entries from students in Years 4 to 12 showed that the consumers of the future already knew how to navigate the marketplace.

“It’s great to see young Queenslanders, like Mckenzie, taking an interest in the important issues of managing their money and enforcing their consumer rights,” he said.

“By researching and presenting a consumer-related issue, such as buying a car, scams or online shopping, Mckenzie and her fellow students got their message across in a relatable and energetic way.

This year, Mckenzie was awarded first prize in the Years 4 to 6 category. Her entry was a poster and video on saving money, banking options and shopping around to find what’s right for you. She was awarded $500 and her school was awarded $2,000.

This follows Mckenzie achieving a highly commended prize in the 2017 Buy Smart Competition.

“I congratulate Mckenzie on being the first student in the history of the competition to win a cash prize for two years running,” Mr Ryan said.

“And another big congratulations to all the students who entered this year’s competition on their creativity and hard work.”
