Day to recognise people with disability

01 December 2015

Local residents are encouraged to celebrate the contribution of people with disability in the community on Thursday 3 December 2015 for International Day of People with Disability.

State Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan MP, said this year’s theme Inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all abilities, aimed to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance.

“International Day of People with Disability is all about celebrating the contribution people with disability make in every community,” Mr Ryan said.

“The day allows individuals, businesses, community organisations and governments at all levels to think about how we can create a more inclusive and accessible society for all.

“I encourage local residents to get on board and help us to send out the message that Queensland communities are much richer for the contribution of people with disability.”

A range of events are being held across Queensland to mark the day with Queensland Government grants helping fund activities ranging from arts and music expos to sports and family fun days.

Mr Ryan said making Queensland communities welcoming to everyone was more important than ever as Queensland prepares for the start of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) from 1 July 2016.

“The NDIS will benefit thousands of Queenslanders with disability, their families, carers and the wider community by enabling greater social and economic participation of people with disability,” he said.

“This year’s theme fits in very well with the rollout of the NDIS, as people with disability will have greater access to service and supports and will be more empowered to join in community lift.”
