Revised program boosts support for young athletes

Young people and sporting officials in the Moreton Bay region will now have better access to state government funding to help them compete in state, national and international sporting events.

State Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan MP, said that rising sporting stars as well as coaches, referees and other officials would be eligible to apply for up to $1,200 over a two-year period under the new Young Athletes Travel Subsidy Scheme.

“We know a lot of our local young athletes are up there competing with the best in the country, and even the world, on the sporting field,” Mr Ryan said.

“We also know that the cost of travelling to another town, state or country can be extremely difficult for families to meet.

“That’s why young athletes will be able to apply for up to $1,200 over a two-year period so we can help them get to that championship.

“The State Government has increased the amount available by up to $1,000 more than the existing scheme.”

Mr Ryan said the opportunities also extended to young sporting officials like coaches, referees and scorers who could also apply.

The Young Athletes Travel Subsidy Scheme opens for applications on 1 July 2015.
